  1. Russians could not ‘be ruled by kindness or persuasion, but only by the whip and the bayonet.’is there some truth in that?I really enjoyed that, a ripping yarn, and horrendously complex events given a straight timeline and unforgettable characters

      I would say there’s no truth in it. It was the impression of a military officer from another country whose only direct experience of Russia was when it was in a state of complete chaos and breakdown
